What is JavaScript?

Where did JavaScript come from?
Contrary to popular belief, JavaScript was not derived directly from the Java programming language. Instead, JavaScript was invented in 1995 by Brendan Eich of Netscape Communications, maker of the then reasonably popular web browser. At the time, this scripting language went under the alias of Mocha, and later was renamed to LiveScript. After some time passed, Sun Microsystems, creator of the Java programming language, renamed LiveScript to JavaScript, which functions much as it did then today - simply with a much wider popularity of application. Today Sun Microsystems maintains the trademark on the JavaScript name.
