Customer Care: F.A.Q.
New Accounts
- How long will it take to set up my account?
To protect our clients and ourselves from fraud and spammers, new setups with Ubiquity Hosting Solutions are not instantaneous. New signups are typically screened within 24 hours, after which a welcome email will be sent to you with all account information. If 24 hours has passed and you have still not received your welcome email, you should contact us right away.
- Does Ubiquity charge for overages?
Unlike competitors, Ubiquity does not charge overage fees on shared web hosting. If your account outgrows it's allotments for disk space and/or bandwidth, you will simply be asked to upgrade to the next plan.
- What if I need to upgrade my plan down the line?
Ubiquity is extremely flexible regarding quickly growing websites. Your plan can be upgraded at any time, and the difference in billing can be pro-rated for the remainder of the month. Ubiquity is able to scale from the smallest shared hosting plans to fully managed arrays of dedicated server clusters - all under the same control panel!
- Is it easy to migrate an existing website to Ubiquity?
Migrating a website is a 3 step process.
- 1) Upload data through FTP
- 2) Dump a .sql backup of any databases, and query in phpMyAdmin.
- 3) Change your script configurations if necessary for file paths and database connection
If you need assistance migrating a website, and are not comfortable doing these things, Ubiquity's staff may or may not be able to help for an additional fee (depending on the complexity of the script / task, and availability of staff). Contact our sales department to inquire.
DNS (Domain Name Services)
- What is a DNS server?
DNS servers point your domain name at the internet address of our web server. If you are registering your domain through us, we will take care of DNS. If you already have your own domain, you will need to set them yourself.
- How do I change my DNS servers?
If you already have a domain hosted elsewhere, you will need to do this through whatever company your domain is currently registered. In almost all scenarios, you can log in on the company site and simply edit this information in two clicks.
- Where are Ubiquity's DNS servers?
ns3.ubiquityhosting.com, and it's evil twin, ns4.ubiquityhosting.com.
- I've set up my account and my DNS OK. Why can't I see my site?
Changes to DNS settings typically take up to 48 hours to circulate around the world (this is called 'DNS propagation'). During this time, your website may or may not be accessible at the new server - and it will likely bounce back and forth between being available and not. In the meantime you should probably be able to access your account via your server's IP address (XX.XXX.XX.XX) which was supplied in your welcome mail.
MySQL Databases
- What is my MySQL servername / hostname?
Your MySQL host with us will always be simply 'localhost'. This tells your script to look on the local server for your database.
- How do I create a MySQL database and User?
You can create and set permissions on your databases in SiteWorx. Check out our Flash Tutorials for using MySQL in SiteWorx if you're having trouble for a step-by-step walkthrough.
- Why does my script say "cannot connect to database"?
This error means exactly what it implies - and 99% of the time, it's a very simple fix. You should start by locating your script's database configuration files. When you do, verify that all information is consistent with the information you have setup in SiteWorx (see directly above), and that your hostname is set as 'localhost'. We also recommend reseting your database password in SiteWorx, as this data is encrypted and will not be shown to you.
- How do I view or make a backup of my database?
All database operations can be done through phpMyAdmin (accessible through SiteWorx). If you have not used phpMyAdmin before, we recommend reading it's documentation on phpmyadmin.com - it's a powerful industry-standard tool, but is not as straight-forward as our other features. Backups run from SiteWorx will also contain database files.
